Exterior Plot and Burial Process
Before the burial, we ensure that all necessary documentation is on file as prescribed by provincial legislation and we have received permission from the Interment Rights Holder to bury the deceased. Once these administrative tasks are complete, we schedule the date of the burial.
On the day of the burial, our team is responsible for both opening and closing the grave after the casket is lowered or the cremated remains are placed in it.
The rite of final commendation and farewell is celebrated after the funeral Mass, and this rite takes place only when the body or cremated remains are present.
Choosing an Exterior Plot
Choosing an exterior plot is an important decision, whether for yourself or a loved one. When researching where you want to have an exterior plot, there are a few important factors to keep in mind:
- Location: Is the cemetery convenient for family and loved ones to visit? Is it meaningful to you or the deceased? Within the cemetery, is the location one that you or your loved one like?
- Size: Burial plots come in several sizes, including single, side-by-side, and double-depth plots. If you or your loved one wants to be buried with a spouse or family members, knowing how many plots you require and their size can help narrow down your options.
- Memorialization: What type of memorial do you want to be placed on this exterior plot? We can connect you with various headstone and monument professionals to create your exact vision.
At Catholic Cemeteries of Ottawa-Cornwall, we have 3 diocesan cemeteries to choose from. Hope Cemetery, Notre Dame Cemetery (Ottawa), Notre-Dame Cemetery (Cornwall).
Cultural and Religious Considerations
While exterior plots are very common within the Catholic Church, different faiths and traditions may have unique requirements for those who have passed. At Catholic Cemeteries of Ottawa-Cornwall, we accept all religions and beliefs and will help you find suitable arrangements to honour your loved ones with the dignity they deserve.
