Burial Process
Before the burial, we must ensure that the proper documentation is on file as prescribed by provincial legislation and that we have received permission from the Interment Rights Holder to bury the deceased. Once these administrative tasks are complete, we can then schedule the date of the burial. On the day of the burial, our team is responsible for both opening and closing the grave after the casket is lowered or the cremated remains are placed in the grave.
The rite of final commendation and farewell is celebrated after the funeral Mass. This rite takes place only when the body or cremated remains are present.
Choosing Burial
Burial is one of the most common ways of handling earthly remains. At Catholic Cemeteries of Ottawa-Cornwall, we’re here to help walk you through every step of the decision-making process so that you can make an informed choice for yourself or a loved one.
When pursuing a burial, you want to consider:
- Personal and Cultural Beliefs: Different religious and cultural beliefs surround funeral customs, so consider them carefully when making your choice. There may be specific guidelines to follow when choosing a burial that differs from other options.
- Final Disposition Offerings: Consider the location of the burial. You want to carefully choose a plot that appeals to you or would appeal to your loved one.
- Memorialization: Burials will traditionally have a headstone or plaque, so you will need to make a careful choice of what will be engraved on it and what it will look like to best honour the deceased.
If you need help choosing a burial service, we’re here to provide valuable insights and help you and your family proceed with a process that suits your needs during this time.
